The Trussell Trust published figures last year stating that the number of people receiving three days' worth of food, just from their food banks, increased from 128,697 in 2011-2012 to 913,138 in 2013-2014. The 'emergency use only' report says how many food bank users 'faced multiple challenges, including ill-health, relationship breakdown, mental health problems or substantial caring responsibilities'. Food bank users that suffered from bereavement were a frequent feature in the research. Food bank users often are too embarrassed to admit they have accepted help from a food bank, yet would be left deprived if not.
Currently we're visiting the Lewisham branch of food banks. The photographs below are taken in the Forest Hill food bank, and are of a volunteer called Alison who is talking with a client receiving food.
