Yesterday a few thousand people took to the streets to Stand Up To Racism. The demonstration assembled outside BBC Portland Place, and walked through central London ending in Trafalgar Square. Placards read 'No to Islamophobia' 'Migration is beautiful' 'No to Racism' 'Stand Up to Racism and Fascism'. The demonstration was peaceful and well organised, apart from when walking through Piccadilly Circus. Around 15 members of the far right Britain First party were assembled on the steps of the Shaftesbury Memorial fountain, and were quickly surrounded and protected by riot police. Protestors from the 'Stand Up To Racism' demonstration were angry with the Britain First parties presence, and for around half an hour views were shouted back and forth from both sides. At one point a Britain First banner was grabbed, and this started a momentary fight, which was quickly settled by the police.
The demonstration took place on UN anti-racism day, 21st March.
